Fact a Day 2022 22 hours, 46 minutes ago Our tasty friend, the scallop! We love their meat and their shells! Scallops are a cosmopolitan family of bivalves which are found in all of the world’s oceans, although never in fresh water. They are one of very few groups of bivalves to be primarily “free-living”, with many species capable of rapidly swimming short distances and even of migrating some distance across the ocean floor. A small minority of scallop species live cemented to rocky substrates as adults, while others attach themselves to stationary or rooted objects such as sea grass at some point in their lives. The majority of species live recumbent on sandy substrates, and when they sense the presence of a predator such as a starfish, they may attempt to escape by swimming swiftly but erratically through the water using jet propulsion created by repeatedly clapping their shells together. Scallops have a well-developed nervous system, and unlike most other bivalves, all scallops have a ring of numerous simple eyes situated around the edge of their mantles.

Fact a Day 2022 23 hours, 15 minutes ago 1/22 – African buffalo herds make decisions by voting.
Apparently, democracy isn\’t limited to humanity. For example, African buffalo herds are known to select the direction they\’ll travel by voting.One by one, the adult females of the herd will stand up, look in a particular direction, and then lay back down. Whichever direction gets the most looks is almost always where the herd travels. If voting is strongly divided, the herd will often split up temporarily.
Red deer and numerous kinds of monkeys display similar democratic behavior.

I'm OK! 23 hours, 21 minutes ago All\’s well here in mid-coast Maine. Cold but doesn\’t penetrate the body like the moist cold of the Mid-Atlantic area, and pawhaps other pawts of our country.
I rested today while mom went in to work at the museum. There is a festive atmosphere here in the towns, and at night near our house, the snow lights for the ski trail are lit. The Camden Snow Bowl is very nearby, plus there are 2 ice festivals – one this weekend, and another next month in Belfast. I, of course, will be hugging my heating vent!

Chip, Three of my brothers and three of my sisters were feral kitties that dad cared for where he worked, when the land they lived on was going to be cleared dad brought them home. It took almost five years but now they are inside only lap kitties, I’m sure that Chessie would be fine with having dinner with us. Tell her she can tell us what she would like for dessert and I’ll make it for us

Rumbling Thunder Patrol 1 day ago Oops! Sorry I’m a bit tardy! Chessie and I were on Mouse Patrol. We know some have moved in with us during this awful cold spell. MOm has made it quite clear that WE are responsible for delivering eviction notices!! But it’s sooo cold, we said. So she said must send the to the basement. They are not allowed even on the bottom step!! We aren’t hearing them right now.

I'm OK! 1 day, 1 hour ago I am OK Last night it was -6 F (Six Degrees below zero Fahrenheit) That was the actual temperature, We don\’t know if there was a wind chill. Right now the temperature went all the way up to 22. It\’s a heat wave. We are supposed to get lake effect snow. We still have all the snow from last week. Mom and I want spring to hurry up and get here.

Fact a Day 2022 1 day, 1 hour ago 1/22 Raccoons grow a thick winter coat that traps body heat close to their skin. They also build up stores of fat during the summer and fall. Body fat stores mostly in their tails, which they can wrap around themselves to keep warm.

FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET
Freezing rain and sleet can both have
scary effects on driving conditions, but
their formations differ in some key
ways. Both types of precipitation occur
when rain formed in warm air in the sky
passes through a layer of cold air near
the ground. Thicker layers of cold air
create sleet, a slushy form of water
that\’s semi-frozen by the time it
reaches the Earth. Thinner layers don\’t

These markings run the entire length of the cat. The base color varies between whitish or tawny yellow, reddish gray and gray.
