Moving on to other Maine frogs! There are at least 9 species and several subspecies. Next one up is the Green Frog (Lithobates clamitans or Rana clamitans), a species of frog native to the eastern half of the United States and Canada. The two subspecies are the bronze frog and the northern green frog.
The northern green frog (Lithobates clamitans melanota is native to northeastern North America and has been introduced to British Columbia. Its mating call sounds like the single note of a plucked banjo. It is also quite common in the pet trade.
Green frogs are common throughout Maine. They are generally green to brown on their back, with dark brown or grayish irregular spots, and two prominent folds that run along their sides, from their eye to their rear.
