    Sea-Monkeys breathe through their feet.
And that’s not the only weird thing about their anatomy: They’re born with just one eye, but grow two more upon reaching maturity.

Dust mites have a pair of creepy, pincer-like claws near their mouth, so they look a little threatening under a microscope. But fear not: These little guys aren’t parasites like lice and bed bugs. They don’t feed on blood, and they don’t bite humans.
That doesn’t mean dust mites are harmless, though. The problem with dust mites is actually that th…[Read more]

Dust mites feed on the human skin cells found in dust. (They don’t care so much about the dirt, soot, and pollen that ends up in dust as well.) You shed about 1.5 grams of skin every day, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). That may not sound like much, but it’s enough to feed a million dust mites. Yes—you read that…[Read more]

Dust mites look like microscopic spiders.. Dust mites are teensy, tiny things: They only grow to about one-quarter to one-third of a millimeter, and you can’t see them with your eyes. Under a microscope, you’d see that dust mites look like white spiders. They have eight legs, so they’re arthropods (not insects).

I’m going to add to Cat’s fruit lesson so read hers first.
So if your favourite fruit isn’t a berry, what might it be? If it has a thick, hard endocarp, it’s probably a drupe, a fancy term for a stone fruit. This group encompasses apricots, mangoes, cherries, olives, avocados, dates and most nuts. Basically, if you wouldn’t want to just bite into…[Read more]

One of the reasons catfish can be found all over the world is because they can adapt to a wide variety of habitats. Catfish can be found in areas where the temperature is 95 degrees and they can also survive at temperatures just above freezing. Typically when the water temperatures gets below 65 degrees catfish will slow down, conserve energy and…[Read more]

Catfish have amazing hearing. They have what is called a Weberian apparatus which serves as an amplifier to underwater sounds. There are four bones that link the inner ear to the swim bladder. When sound waves bounce off the bladder, the signal is sent to the ear and the sound is amplified.

The greatest concentration of sensory organs on a catfish is located on their whiskers, also known as barbels. Catfish develop up to four pairs of whiskers.

Hello my friends! We are doing well. Cat has to go to the vet tomorrow for her shots and a wellness check up, but don’t tell her because she doesn’t know. Mom and dad are doing well, they are both finally negative. Dad was much sicker than mom was. It is getting cold here, I think winter is on its way.

      • I am so happy that your mom and dad are both negative and are feeling better. Purrs for Cat.
        • Glad your pawrents are both in negative territory again, Nugget!
          • So thankful the pawrents are better!! I tried to help you out…I told Cat you didn’t tell about her vet visit probably because you had been sworn to secrecy. Just say nothing to her, except that you’re glad her test were good, and that you love her!! That’s all true!!

Botanically, the almond is a stone fruit related to the cherry, the plum, and the peach. The next time you eat a peach, crack open the pit. Inside, you’ll find what looks like a small almond, but don’t eat it. It’s bitter!

What is a Petoskey Stone? The “Petoskey Stone,” which became the official state stone of Michigan in 1965, is actually a petrified fossil coral of the genus hexagonaria. Approximately 350 million years ago, a warm, salt water sea covered Michigan. In the depths of this sea, the members of the colony coral lived.

It is a compound coral in tha…[Read more]

The production of honey is done by bees throughout the summer. They create so much honey to ensure their colonies have enough to eat through the cold winter months. The honey gives the bees energy to vibrate their bodies, creating heat to keep the queen and the hive warm. Even more interesting is the fact it would take just two tablespoons of the…[Read more]

There is quite a variety of honey and each flavor and color will depend on the source of the nectar bees have gathered. Popular honeys include wildflower, buckwheat, and clover honey. There is even eucalyptus honey, which offers the slight flavor of menthol. Honey colors are graded by numbers, with the highest number indicating the darkest color.…[Read more]

When honey bees come back to the hive with pollen for honey-making, they perform a little dance to let the rest of the hive know where the good flowers are located. The bee will then turn the collected nectar into honey by adding enzymes from their stomach and reducing moisture by flapping their wings at a high rate of speed. To make one pound of…[Read more]
