But I’ll bet what you’re most excited about are the wild ponies!
The horses on Assateague Island are feral animals. Like feral cats, they are not domesticated. They can stomp, bite, and kick you all the way to Florida, so you’d better watch out if you see their ears pinned straight back. They live on the island year round and the most popular pony legend says they’re descendants of the survivors of a Spanish shipwreck off the coast of Virginia.
Members of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department are the ponies’ caretakers. They provide healthcare and food when needed.
