Make-Up 11/2: Hippopotamuses are found in Africa. The name hippopotamus means ‘river horse’ and is often shortened to hippo.
The hippopotamus is generally considered the third largest land mammal (after the White rhinoceros and elephant).

    12/3
Cats sleep an average of fifteen hours a day, and some can sleep up to twenty hours in a twenty-four hour period. Which raises the question: Why do cats sleep so much?
    The ‘Catnap’

The first thing you should realize is that cats are most active between dusk and dawn, which means that they sleep mostly during the day and become active around…[Read more]

Sadly, I am no longer able to pawticipate in this reading group due to time contraints, but Maggie and Felix were huge fans. Mom would like to know if one of the original group could remind her of the book series that had the California Cats who could talk. She has racked her brain and just can’t think of the series. The dad was a sherrif,…[Read more]

We’ll be posting some boats parade pix throughout the month. Hazardous as these outings are, and relatively unpleasant in many aspects, they are beautiful to the onlookers.

They spend a lot of time decorating their boats and dedicating their time to a cause which often benefits a charity. The downsides can include inebriated pilots; water…[Read more]

Years ago, Mango, Willow and friends brought this to us. Purrfect to light up our holiday season!

  • We will be sending regular cards out again this year, but mom often uses Jacquie Lawson for other greetings that have to go out. JL adds new designs every year, and mom remembers getting the very first one many years ago, featuring Chudley the black lab. There are fabulous cat ones, too!

Many great companies have e-cards, and most are free to…[Read more]

Very chilly here today! Our town of Camden had its Christmas parade this evening, but a couple of other towns had to cancel their events due to high winds. One was a Bonfire planned for Lincolnville Beach; and the other was the tree lighting in Belfast. Amazing what a difference a few miles make!

  • Another Maine fish: Landlocked Salmon (Salmo salar sebago)
Average size is 16-18 inches and 1-1 1/2 pounds, but 3-5 pound fish are not uncommon.

Adults are generally silvery with a slightly forked tail and small X-shaped markings on the back and upper sides. Juvenile salmon have a dark red spot between each pair of parr marks. Mature males…[Read more]

I’m going to add to Cat’s fruit lesson so read hers first.
So if your favourite fruit isn’t a berry, what might it be? If it has a thick, hard endocarp, it’s probably a drupe, a fancy term for a stone fruit. This group encompasses apricots, mangoes, cherries, olives, avocados, dates and most nuts. Basically, if you wouldn’t want to just bite…[Read more]

It turns out berry is actually a botanical term, not a common English one. Blackberries, mulberries, and raspberries are not berries at all, but bananas, pumpkins, avocados and cucumbers are. So what makes a berry?

a venn diagram of common berries vs botany defined berries

Well, a berry has seeds and pulp (properly called “pericarp”) that dev…[Read more]

We are doing ok. It\’s cold here but at least it\’s not snowing! Mom has all of the Christmas decorating done except for the tree. After we have tomato at our dinner the other night, mom had to get some tomato soup and hard rolls for lunch today.
